Last Day of the Season

Just wanted to write a quick post to let my scant readership know that I'm still alive and have in fact been working on a sort-of thesis for this site. It should hopefully be coming within the next 24 hours.

Today is the last day of the regular season and games will be getting underway as I publish this post. Wild Card spots are up for grabs in both leagues, and could take longer than today to sort out in the A.L. if the Tigers win and either the Orioles or Blue Jays lose.

Joey Votto , whose Reds were eliminated from playoff contention a long time ago, will be putting the finishing touches on maybe the best second-half hitting season in living memory (he's hitting .411 since the ASB entering today).

Meanwhile, two days ago Bill James previewed his version of Wins Above Replacement. Against his express wishes, other sabermatricians have already taken Bill's prototype and ran with it. Tangotiger posted about it over at his blog, and now it appears he and Bill are collaborating behind the scenes on a new framework. Fascinating stuff for a baseball-nerd like me.
